To no one’s surprise, the South is all sorts of faded and banned and otherwise backwards.

A network of ultra-conservative groups is ramping up an offensive on multiple fronts to turn the American public against wind farms and Barack Obama’s energy agenda.

A number of rightwing organisations, including Americans for Prosperity, which is funded by the billionaire Koch brothers, are attacking Obama for his support for solar and wind power. The American Legislative Exchange Council (Alec), which also has financial links to the Kochs, has drafted bills to overturn state laws promoting wind energy.

Now a confidential strategy memo seen by the Guardian advises using “subversion” to build a national movement of wind farm protesters.

The Koch brothers have more money than they’ll ever be able to spend in their entire lives, and they are actively trying to destroy efforts to make our planet safer for our children and grandchildren, just so they can have more money.

They are the platonic ideal of evil.

Double Agent of the Day: No, it’s not Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. The would-be suicide bomber sent by the Yemen branch of al-Qaida to blow up a U.S.-bound plane in April was actually a double agent who infiltrated the most dangerous of al-Qaida affiliates, in the Arabian Peninsula, American officials revealed today.
The agent provided to the CIA, Saudi, and other foreign intelligence agencies the innovative, “custom fit” underwear bomb designed for his air attack, as well as critical information on al-Qaida leaders; the latter resulted in Sunday’s drone strike that killed a top al-Qaida operative and suspect in the 2000 bombing of the destroyer Cole.
The agent’s identity, nationality, and intelligence service have not been disclosed, and he and his family have been moved to safe locations.

So just as virtually every “domestic Terror plot” is one conceived, directed, funded and controlled by the FBI, this new Al Qaeda plot from Yemen was directed by some combination of the CIA and its Saudi partners. So this wasn’t merely a failed, nascent plot which is causing this fear-mongering media orgy: it was one controlled at all times by the U.S. and Saudi Governments.

US Senate Agreement Groups: How US Senators Have Agreed over Time

The interactive flow graph Agreement Groups in the United States Senate [friggeri.net] by French PhD student Adrien Friggeri reveals how US senators have agreed (or disagreed) over time.
All historical US Senators were subdivided in overlapping groups of agreement using a custom-made community detection algorithm called C3, which was specifically designed to detect maximally cohesive groups in a network. Here, I guess the network was created from recognizing how people voted for specific bills.

As Digby says, it’s not a perfect match, but the lines are still there, and very clear.

The people who voted to pass these laws should be ashamed of themselves. It’s the Twenty-First Fucking Century, you racist shitbags.

The Supreme Court can legitimately return Obamacare?” asks a headline on the French news site 9 POK . The article slowly walks through the legal rationale behind the court’s right to wipe away Congress’s legislation. “Sans précédent, extraordinaires” reads the article. In the German edition of The Financial Times, Sabine Muscat is astonished at Justice Antonin Scalia’s argument that if the government can mandate insurance, it can also require people to eat broccoli. “Absurder Vergleich” reads the article’s kicker, which in English translates to, “Absurd Comparison.” In trying to defeat the bill, Muscat writes, Scalia is making a “strange analogy [to] vegetables.

Imagine a country in which the very richest people get all the economic gains. They eventually accumulate so much of the nation’s total income and wealth that the middle class no longer has the purchasing power to keep the economy going full speed. Most of the middle class’s wages keep falling and…
